Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaghy is a fine example of masterful storytelling

Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaghy is a fine example of masterful storytelling. Charlotte McConaghy’s writing style is good and simple to fall into. I liked the manner in which she wove the story around the significance of wolves to the environment, and the human inclination toward selfishness and even mercilessness when wildlife inconveniences us. This book is magical, tragic and raw. It’s likewise difficult to classify this story into one genre however if the synopsis gets you, I highly recommend this one.

Inti Flynn is the head of a group of researcher once again introducing wolves to the Highlands of Scotland. The expectation is that by taking these hunters back to space, nature can achieve the equilibrium it needs for the land to heal itself and grow in the manner that it needs to grow for quite a long time to come. Inty brings her messed up sister, Aggie, trusting she can heal her, as well.

I was so unhappy with Inti, in spite of all the good she is endeavouring to do, because I could feel the pressure and disappointment she was carrying with her, to the life of individuals whose livelihoods she was compromising.


The writing is excellent and we are in the head of Inty. We can see that even she is conflicted, broken in such countless ways, not always realizing what is ideal yet in addition realizing that some of what she does harms both people and animals. Inty is hurt, confused, angry, and she feels too week to change the past and to fix what’s to come. I am so impressed with how the writer brings about Inty’s awareness that she went about things in way that was not useful and that she knows she needs to track down a superior way.

Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaghy had everything. It has a murder mystery thriller aspect, climate change, along with a beautifully written book about families, sisterhood, and sensitive issues such as rape and abuse.

Each of the characters are superbly rendered and portrayed as complex individuals. Even the supporting characters feel like genuine people. Inti is a strong lady but on the other hand is broken and has been changed by certain events from her past.

I highly recommend Once There Were Wolves by Charlotte McConaghy to anyone who enjoys nature or murder mystery!
